Sophie, 35, seems to have an ideal life – two children, a successful husband to whom she has been married for a decade, a job she loves and a beautiful family home.
But her mum Sally, 60, says Sophie is living a lie – and Sally is even helping her keep her “secret” under wraps.
What’s worse is that Sally feels no guilt about it. In fact, she enjoys it.
“I help her cover her tracks”
“Watching my two precious grandchildren while my only daughter is on a date is my favorite thing,” she wrote in an article in The Sun.
But Sophie is never having dinner with her husband – she’s meeting her secret boyfriend and her mother is helping her cover her tracks.
Sally is apparently the only person who knows that her daughter has been secretly cheating on the father of her children for the past two years.
So why is she so willing to assist in the deception and even indulge in it?
Because, in her words, “I never liked my daughter’s husband, Dave, and I always knew she could do better.”
“When I first met him in a restaurant in 2013, I thought he was bold, loud and full of himself,” she explains. “At the time, I was convinced that the romance would end. She had had boyfriends before and had always remained very independent, but as I watched her affection for Dave, I was shocked.
“Gorgeous, smart and sharp, Sophie, then 23, had a great job in PR and could have chosen her own husbands. I knew she would come to her senses soon.”
But to her horror, Dave proposed two years into their relationship.
The two-year scam
Sally’s heart sank, but she cheered her on dutifully, secretly hoping her daughter would change her mind before the big day.
“Once, I asked her carefully if it was definitely what she wanted,” she said, “but she snapped back that of course it was. I never said anything after that, worried it might drive a wedge between us. “Sophie knew I would never warm to Dave and constantly make excuses. She would make excuses when he forgot her birthday or didn’t show up to big family events.”
After Sophie became a mother, she gave up her career to care for her children, while Dave became less and less involved in family life.
“Sophie struggled to look after two young children and the house, not having her own life,” she continued. “I knew Sophie was starting to get mad at him.”
Sophie eventually returned to work part-time and began to mention a colleague named Ben more and more. But Sally noticed that she always left his name out of conversation when she talked to Dave.
“One day, when Dave was away for another weekend of golf, Sophie asked if I’d mind looking after the kids so she could go for a drink after work,” said Sally. “She would never have gone if Dave was at home – even though he was out with friends all the time – so of course I said yes.
“When she came home, she mentioned Ben a lot, laughing about what he had said. Seeing him happy gave me a burst of excitement, but also doubt. I didn’t hesitate before telling her that if she wanted to go out for a drink with Ben again, I would always watch the kids.
“She gave me a knowing smile—she understood me completely. After I’d had the baby a couple of times, she came over to my house in the middle of the day, unannounced, for a cup of tea. “Ben and I have a relationship, Mum, ” she confessed.
“I smiled and she quickly changed the subject, clearly happy to get the secret off her chest. I wrapped my arms around her as she left and promised her her secret was safe with me.”
